What is adult skate?
Roller skating is not just something kids do on weekends.
Grown-ups all over the United States have created a thriving culture that includes roller derby, skate clubs and crews, multi-day skate parties, and competitions. Some people call it: the Skate Life.
At Skate Galaxy, the adult skate session hosts skaters who show up on Sunday nights from 8 PM to 11 PM to get their weekly roll on. We are talking 8 wheel quad skates, not roller blades for the most part. Sometimes called, “Old School Skate Night,” adult skate has been around for (how many) years. Anyone is welcome to skate, as long as you are at least 18 years old.
Remember how you used to skate fast around the rink chasing your friends when you were in middle school? This is so much more than that. Skaters come to work on their skills, their footwork, and their endurance. There are beginners holding on to the wall and there are people doing aerial spins. There are derby girls practicing their t-stops and skate club members practicing their line dances. The one universal is that everyone is smiling, laughing, and having fun.
One important part of Adult Skate night is the music. Skate Galaxy is the home rink of Oklahoma’s number one skate DJ – Li “DJ Soultrain” Jones. Roller skating has its own music. There is a unique style that works for skating and DJ Soultrain has been a part of it since 1985. He studies music as a community of DJs that make their own skate songs. He travels across the country to DJ at skate parties with hundreds of people. Truth be told, he is the reason we have adult skate. He is leading the effort to revive the skate life in OKC and its catching on!
Now let’s talk about what Adult Skate is not. It’s not the club. You won’t be hearing your favorite club bangers all night long. It’s skate music: a mix of soul, R&B, hip hop, and rap from today all the way back to the 70s with songs you probably never heard before thrown in there too. Most of the time, DJ Soultrain tries to play something that everyone will like. The first Sunday of every month is Retro Skate night with hits from the 70s, 80s or 90s of course requests are always welcome.
It’s not for children. The music is not always appropriate for children. It is undeniable that some of our skaters have a sexy skate style. There’s even been a few love matches come out of the OKC skate life! For those that would rather stand on the carpet than roll, there’s games to play and sports on the big screen. If you wanna just watch, that’s okay too. The rink is well maintained, the bathrooms are clean, and the staff is always accommodating. It’s just grown people getting together to have a good time, relax, and get fit, whether they are enjoying the entertainment on or off the rink.
It’s not exclusive. Skaters of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds come together every Sunday night. The regulars who skate for the love of skating show up week after week. They range from age 18 to 72, live all over the state, and come from many different walks of life. They are often excited to see new faces and love to help people who want to learn.
Adult Skate at Skate Galaxy is roller skating for adults who want to spend a few hours having fun. You can keep it casual or grow into the culture, but whatever you decide to do, just try it. It’s nearly impossible not to have a good time. In fact, its good for you!
